Moussaka 🇬🇷
A beloved Greek dish, Moussaka is a hearty casserole made with layers of eggplant, minced meat, and béchamel sauce.
Ingredients:
- 2 large eggplants, sliced
- 1 lb ground lamb or beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 cup grated cheese (Kefalotyri or Parmesan)
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 egg yolk
Instructions:
- Brush eggplant slices with olive oil and bake until golden.
- Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes and cinnamon. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- For the béchamel, melt butter, whisk in flour, and gradually add milk. Cook until thickened, then stir in the egg yolk.
- Layer the eggplant and meat sauce in a baking dish. Pour the béchamel sauce over the top.
- Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 30-40 minutes until golden.
